Young Cambodians' Role in Development Celebrated on International Youth Day

Phnom Penh, August 15, 2024: The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) celebrated the contributions of Cambodian youth to the nation's development during an event in Phnom Penh marking International Youth Day. The event, themed “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” brought together more than 250 young people from various local organizations to showcase how they are leveraging technology to address community needs.

During the event, USAID Mission Director Kerry Pelzman praised Cambodia’s youth for their creativity and resilience, saying, “I have been living in Cambodia for over a year and a half now, and I am continually impressed by the ingenuity, resourcefulness, and overall spirit of Cambodia’s youth.”

The celebration featured a panel discussion where young participants discussed the opportunities and challenges of using digital solutions in development activities. An important session was dedicated to raising awareness about online safety, offering practical tools to avoid cybercrime and cyberbullying.

Thern Thy, an Indigenous youth from the Kouy community, shared his experience providing digital training to other Kouy youth, which led to the creation of a website to promote cultural knowledge. Another young presenter, Buntha Somavattey from Phnom Penh, highlighted her involvement in Tech Box, a youth-led initiative aimed at helping high school students navigate their options for university studies.

The event, co-hosted by Glean Asia, featured interactive booths where youth could engage in various digital activities. The digital content created during the event will be shared on the AYL Facebook page in the coming weeks. Nicole Johnson, AYL Chief of Party, emphasized the importance of such events in inspiring youth to contribute to their communities and tackle societal challenges through innovative solutions.

AYL is a five-year initiative aimed at enhancing youth civic engagement and participation in development, political processes, and policy dialogue, and is implemented by Chemonics International.
